## How Does Real-Time Courier Tracking Actually Work?

Ever wondered how your food delivery app knows exactly where your courier is — in
real time? It feels like magic, but it’s actually clever engineering with some well-
managed trade-offs.

### The Short Answer

Courier apps send periodic GPS updates to a backend server, which then distributes
controlled, scoped updates to the customer’s app.

### Explain It Like I’m 5

 1. The courier’s phone checks where they are.
 2. It tells a big computer in the middle.
 3. That computer tells your phone, “Your courier moved a little.”
 4. Your phone draws the movement smoothly so it looks alive, not jumpy.

### The Engineer-Level Explanation

Here’s what’s actually happening under the hood:

 * The courier app reads GPS using the OS location service.
 * Location updates are sent every _N_ seconds (or distance-based triggers).
 * Data is sent via HTTP or a persistent connection (WebSocket).
 * The backend validates accuracy, freshness, and order assignment.
 * Updates are throttled to reduce battery drain and server load.
 * Locations are stored in fast in-memory or time-series stores.
 * The customer app subscribes **only** to its assigned courier.
 * Real-time delivery uses WebSocket / SSE / Pub-Sub systems.
 * The UI _interpolates_ between GPS points to hide jitter.
 * Fallback polling kicks in when real-time connections fail.

### Key Engineering Trade-offs

| Trade-off | The Tension |
| Update frequency | vs battery consumption |
| Real-time accuracy | vs network reliability |
| Scale | Tens of thousands of moving couriers simultaneously |
| Privacy | Strict access control per order |
| UX | Perceived smoothness over raw accuracy |

### Why This Matters

Most “real-time” systems are **controlled illusions**. The courier location you
see isn’t truly live — it’s a smoothed, interpolated, throttled representation of
reality. Good engineering isn’t about chasing perfect live data. It’s about **managing
constraints** to deliver the best possible user experience.

Next time you watch that little icon glide across your map, you’ll know there’s
a whole distributed system working quietly behind the scenes.
